AN ODE TO LORCA……

Situated in the heart of Granada, a stone throw away from all the sights and attractions, this restored 20th Century building is a hommage to Spain´s most revolutionary poet and native of Granada, Federico García Lorca. He is the inspiration behind the naming of both this Hotel and its rooms. His poetic phrases include references to numbers (¨7 corazones tengo,¨ or ¨I have 7 hearts¨), which are imaginitively written on the walls next to each corresponding bedroom.

Set at the junction of two residential streets, on arrival you may not realise just how priviledged this location is. A split-level roof terrace with 360º panoramic views over tiled rooftops stretch across the city, and all the way to the Sierra Nevada and distant mountains. The illuminated Cathedral – almost at arm´s length – and Alhambra Palace are stunning at night. When you walk through the front door of the Hotel the Moorish influence is apparent and the attention to detail will not go unnoticed. The small sitting area with its Moroccan rug, bold-coloured cushions and ancient well are just a sneak-preview of the rooms.

Comprised of 13 Doubles, 1 Superior Double and 1 Junior Suite, the 15 bedrooms are found over four floors. Their small size is more than compensated for by their charm. All have been individually decorated – exposed brick walls, beamed ceilings, bright coloured pillows and textured fabrics are harmonious. The tiled floors are original to the building, and although they are worn in some spots this only adds to the Hotel´s character. Lighting plays an important role in the décor; beautiful Moroccan lamps cast intricate shadows on the walls and most rooms receive abundant light owing to their exterior windows. Some noise from passing cars can be expected; if you are a light sleeper you may wish to request an interior room (of which there are three) upon booking. Some bathrooms have showers, others baths, and all have impressive one-of-a-kind, hand-carved stone sinks. Rooms are equipped with televison, internet access, heating and air-conditioning. The Superior Double and Junior Suite have coffee and tea-making facilities.

The breakfast room at Casa de Federico (situated in the adjoining building) is no ordinary breakfast room – in tune with Granada´s Arabic history, it is decorated as an Arab tent or ¨Jaima¨ – complete with authentic Moroccan tea pots and hand-painted glasses. Only breakfast is served at the Hotel, but this is no cause for alarm as you are spoilt for choice in this city when it comes to restaurants and tapas bars.

An excellent base from which to explore the city, and I highly recommend you purchase your tickets to the Alhambra Palace well in advance (www.alhambra-tickets.es) in order to avoid long queues on the day of your visit.

If you arrive by car, do keep in mind that parking in Granada can be a nightmare. There is a public car park next to the Cathedral where it is recommended you leave your car. From here it is less than 5 minutes on foot to the Hotel.

An ideal citybreak Hotel if you are looking for charming accommodation at exceptional value.
