THE SULTAN BOBADIL ..............

German born Burkhard Weber and his American wife Leslie had long had a dream of creating a thriving boutique Hotel and gourmet restaurant. His many years of working in food and beverage within the Hotel Industry in such places and Singapore and Malaysia gave him the basis to realise this dream and the results are the charming and highly successful Amanhavis Hotel and Restaurant. Situated in the village of Benahavis, just 15 minutes by car from the “ritz and glitz” of Marbella and Peurto Banus, this converted village house, painted in Moorish colours is a shrine to the history of Andalucia.

An old wooden door leads off the narrow street (parking 100m down the road) into the warm and welcoming reception. You can immediately see that there is an attention to detail and a love of interior design. The “corazon” or heart of the Hotel is the pretty flower filled patio which serves as the restaurant when weather permits. In the centre of this patio is a small plunge pool. It is a peaceful oasis, a lovely place to start the day with breakfast and to finish it with a gastronomic dinner. There is also a roof terrace for those wishing to take the sun.

The 9 bedrooms – 3 deluxe, 4 superiors and 2 standards – are arranged around the patio on different levels, facing different directions, and all are individually styled with evocative names. The Sultan Bobadil’s Chamber (he was the King who handed the Alhambra Palace in Granada over to the Catholic Kings without a war so that the palace remained in tact) is Moorish in style. I loved the Astronomer’s Observatory where you can lie in bed and look at the stars through your glass cupola (Burkhard has even provided a telescope for your use!). The use of colour and fabrics in all the rooms creates a warm, intimate feel. Be delighted in The Spice Trader’s Caravan as you look for the hide-away dug into the earth where you will find the cache of aromatic delights, or hunt for the booty of The Horse Thief in his hide-out. Everything you would expect from a 4 star hotel – satellite TV, telephone, internet access, safes, minibars, bathrobes, slippers etc. The modern equipment such as the TVs are all hidden away in armoires or cupboards so as not to detract from the style of the rooms.

The restaurant has gained an excellent reputation along with the Hotel. It was featured in an article in The Daily Telegraph as one of the best ten restaurants in Andalucia. It is open to the public for dinner. In the cooler months dining is indoors, spilling out into the patio as the weather gets warmer. The attention to detail continues; artesanial hand crafted tiles adorn the table tops depicting the continuing history of Andalucia. The cuisine is described as “Cuisine du Marché” The Chef goes daily to the surrounding markets finding what is fresh and in season to create daily menus. Hence guests can choose from a good choice of starters, main courses (fish, meat and vegetarian) and desserts. As the menus are printed daily, you even get it personalized with your name!

An ideal Hotel for those who want a small intimate Hotel with an excellent restaurant. Excellent for walkers as you can just leave the village and head into the hills. Golfers are within a 20 minute drive of numerous courses.
