A FAMILY IN THE FOREST ..............

For a beautiful location in a wonderful valley on the edge of a forest you only have to travel inland from the beaches and city of Alicante. It is a different world. The nearby village of Biar with its imposing castle is as Spanish as it gets and the Valley of Vinalopo is a nature lover’s paradise. This beautifully restored Masia (large farmhouse) is a real find. Isabel and Roberto (and their delightful two young children) have lavished so much love and attention on Mas Fontanelles that they deserve what is already a great success story. The 250 year old building was fully reformed by them and architect Joachim Aracil Belod, and opened as a Hotel in 2001. The owners are “hands on” in every aspect and you will leave as a family friend rather than a client. Personal service with charm. Isabel is an artist and her artistic talents and love of ochre and blue abound in the decoration of the communal salons and restaurant.

The area is so rich in walking routes and national parks that any rambler is spoilt for choice. There are walks from the Hotel also. Guides are available for walks in the National parks (reserved in advance). Biar is also on the famous “Route of the Castles” – a great day trip by car for lovers of historical monuments. The Hotel has mountain bikes available and horseriding is nearby. Painting lessons can also be provided (please contact us for details).

The Masia is situated in over an acre of garden and there is now a newly installed swimming pool (not open in the winter months) for guests' use. You are surrounded by pines and cypresses. There is a lovely walled patio garden (the cottage room is situated off this) with a terrace. This is a no smoking Hotel except for outside on the terraces.

Inside is equally as welcoming as the nature that surrounds you. Built over two floors, there are a couple of cosy communal lounges and one has a wood burning stove. One houses a small library and games room. The building is completely centrally heated.

The 8 bedrooms are simple in their decoration, but a wonderful mix of all the rest that one finds in an old building. They are warm and romantic with their high beamed ceilings and wooden floors. The decoration continues the artistic theme and paintings by both Isabel and her mother adorn the walls. Restored antique furniture appears discreetly in all the nooks and crannies. No impersonal room numbers – each one is named after a tree! They are double rooms (all ensuite) and one has a terrace. Two have small balconies. A couple of the rooms have a galleried loft which has a bed for children of over 5 years of age (due to the step ladder access). The Cottage Room is the only one outside of the main building and is an ideal honeymoon retreat set off the patio.

Passing from the reception hall you pass by the old and lovingly restored bread oven, before entering into the “renowned restaurant”. Breakfasts including home-made cakes, jams and marmalades are served here. Dinner is available to guests, but you do need to inform the Hotel the day before. This ensures the freshest of ingredients - the creative Mediterranean Cuisine should not be missed. Clients rave about it – especially all those home-made desserts! Vegetarians are catered for, but please let them know in advance.

An ideal Hotel for those who want peace and quiet within an hour of the coast. An extraordinary walker’s paradise. A Spanish experience (the Hotel is always full at weekends with Spaniards “in the know” so book early or spend a few days Monday to Thursday).
