Barcelona´s prestigious Eixample district, with its tree-lined avenues and appealing architecture, is undoubtedly the crème de la crème of this city´s neighbourhoods. Granados 83 blends in harmoniously with its refined milieu on Carrer Enric Granados, a street that takes its name from the renowned 19th century Catalan composer and pianist. In early 2006, this original hospital gave birth to a brand new Boutique Hotel.

A doorman clad in hip clothing awaits your arrival before sliding glass doors that glide open to expose a dazzling foyer. From the cupola 7 stories above, light pours down through gleaming glass lifts, and, at the same time rises up through glass-tiled floors, playfully having its way with the brick walls and ornate columns. Dramatic lines and textures busied my eyes as I felt like I had walked onto the set of a stage production where intricate brickwork, bronze and buddhist-inspired décor are the main protagonists. The young dapper staff, looking like they have just stepped out of a fashion magazine are energetic, creating an up-beat (and handsome) atmosphere to go along with the Hotel.

Off reception you will find a small swanky bar. Then follow the staircase down a level to the restaurant where creative Mediterranean cuisine with an Asian twist is on offer. To one side of the restaurant is a split-level courtyard dotted with tables and chairs for summer dining. Take note of the iron beams; once solely having a structural purpose they are now part of the décor, giving an industrial feel not unlike a New York City loft. To the other side of the restaurant, a stunning corridor filled with glass-blown bronze tiles leads you to the lifts where you will be whisked up to your room.

Although larger than most of the Hotels we feature, Granados 83 has been designed in such a way that intimacy is not at all forsaken by size. Of the Hotel´s 77 bedrooms, four are Duplex Suites which are situated in what would have been a separate wing of the hospital. Guests staying in these Suites have private and exlusive use of an elongated plunge pool. The remaining 73 rooms, divided amongst Doubles (some of which are Twin) and Singles, are situated over 6 floors. Despite being a touch on the small side, style and comfort undeniably prevail. Two sleek and spacious rooms on the ground floor have been adapted for wheelchair access. The rooms are minimalist in design; brick, leather, glass, Indonesian wood tabletops and gorgeous Greek marble tiles all complement each other to create a space of calm. The intricate lighting does take some getting used to, but will allow you to achieve just the right mood. Each room has one-of-a-kind objets d´art, so, if you want to see them all, you will have to sleep in all of the rooms! Double-glazed windows help rid the rooms of street noise in this already tranquil neighbourhood. Room amenities include flat screen TVs, ADSL internet, heating and air-con, mini-bar, hair dryer and bathrobes. For those of you travelling solo I recommend booking a double room as the extra space will be appreciated.

The roof terrace, with its two plunge pools, loungers and cocktail bar provides a peaceful setting to return to after a day´s sightseeing. The plunge pools are not heated and are therefore best enjoyed in the summer months. Snacks can be ordered from a light menu. The cocktail bar is open to the public at night, and is open year round.

Some of Gaudí´s most celebrated works including Casa Batlló and Casa Mila, also known as ¨La Pedrera¨, are within easy walking distance. Twenty minutes on foot will get you to La Plaza de Catalunya, Las Ramblas and the Gothic Quarter. If you are not up for the walk, no problem! You are just three blocks from the Diagonal metro station on the blue and green lines, and two blocks from the Hospital Clinic stop on the blue line. The hop-on, hop-off city tour bus stops regularly along the prestigious Paseo de Gracia (at 3 blocks). Shopaholics – up those credit card limits – you will be in your glory.

An ideal citybreak Hotel if you are looking for stylish accommodation in a fantastic neighbourhood, and for those who love the quiet side of a big bustling city.
