In a quiet street, Calle Campomanes, just a hundred metres from the Opera Metro station is this converted classical 19th Century building. Its location is perfect for the Royal Opera House, the Royal Palace and Plaza Mayor. Its proximity to the Metro system makes it an excellent base for sightseeing and shopping with the main shopping area of Gran Via and Chueca being just a couple of stops away. Hotel Meninas opened its doors after complete restoration in 2005 and is now gaining a reputation as a quiet oasis in which to stay.

It has a contemporary feel which is apparent from the moment you enter reception from the classical façade of the street. Black and grey mix with “objets d’art”. An interior designer has had their way in here! The old wooden staircase has been stripped, stained and polished to its former glory and is in striking contrast to the modern touches in all other areas. If you cannot manage the stairs, there are lifts. Greys and blacks are even extended to the wall coverings.

There is a salon and small bar/cafeteria off the reception which is a good place for a drink before heading out for dinner or if you need a “pick-me-up” after a hard day’s shopping and sightseeing! There is a giant plasma TV screen and a bit of blue added in for modernity! The staff are young and friendly.

The 37 bedrooms, 8 of which are Junior Suites, are excellently equipped. There are twins, doubles and singles and some family rooms, many with showers and not baths (so please specify at the time of booking if you want a bath) and a couple of rooms are adapted for wheelchair access and for those with mobility problems. They are arranged over the floor upper floors of the building. Some look out to the street, which I found quiet, whilst many of the others are around the enclosed inner patio - even quieter if you do not like street noise. All are grey in tones with the odd touches of colour thrown in - a vibrant green cushion on the sofa; a fuchsia pink “throw” on the bed. I especially loved the Junior Suites on the upper floor with their sloping roofs under the eaves – reminded me of trendy London warehouse conversions. Halogen lighting and modern bathrooms or shower rooms have been added by the interior designer’s hand. Flat screen TV’s, satellite, DVDs (available free of charge from reception), cable access to internet, heating, air-con, mini-bar, safe and hairdryer are supplied in all rooms. In the suites there are hydro-massage baths.

Buffet breakfasts are served at your leisure in the basement, which was the old wine cellar of the building. Mind your head – its low arches below street level are an attractive and original feature and are again used effectively with the contemporary colour theme of white and pink.

An ideal Hotel for those who want a city break in a modern hotel on an intimate scale. Its location in the centre of the city is ideal for discovering the best that Madrid has to offer. Excellent Metro and airport connections.
