A NIGHT AT THE OPERA ..............

It was a joy to find a seven-bedroomed Hotel in this bustling city. Location is paramount and Casa de Madrid is situated slap, bang next door to the Royal Opera House within a minute of the Opera Metro station (on Lines 2, 5 and 10 of Madrid’s excellent transport system). It is a hidden jewel, created in 2002 and situated on the second floor of an old building with the smallest of a 3 inch sign outside its entrance to indicate it is there. From the outside you would never know. That said, it has a reputation as one of Madrid’s most famous Hotels and if you are looking for creature comforts in opulent surroundings then this is for you.

Taking the rickety old-fashioned lift to the first floor you ring the doorbell and are admitted to the reception area. The lovely María greeted me with great warmth and I was immediately struck by the quite astounding décor. It is like being in a grand private residence. The décor is no surprise as the interiors have been designed by one of Spain’s most noted interior designers, Dona Marta Medina. The result is like being in a theatrical set, (could easily have been borrowed from the Opera House over the road!!), filled with antiques and knick-knacks from Dona Marta’ s travels throughout the world. It is stunning. Rich fabrics (most of the furniture is covered in silk), hand-painted frescoes (by an Italian mother and daughter team), sculptures, objets d’art and candles are everywhere. The Hotel brochure states “Enjoy exquisite detail and service from a staff devoted to an elegant and aristocratic ambience”. Well, I cannot argue with that – a spot on description!

If you like being “en famille” the salon is the place to be where you can meet the other guests (only ever 13 at a time!!). Breakfast is served here and the Hotel thoughtfully provides a complimentary evening glass of wine before you venture out for dinner. The staff will happily provide restaurant recommendations and make reservations. Service is always with a smile. There is a library, and information on Madrid and its sites is readily available

The 7 bedrooms are all individually themed and take their names from one of the places that has inspired Dona Marta during her travels. There is a Suite (Damascus), 3 Deluxe Doubles (Spanish, Greek, Indian), the Blue Room (slightly bigger than a Standard), a Standard Double (Kenya) and a Single (Zen). My only criticism is that the bathrooms are small and tend to be old fashioned. They are, however, completely in the style of this aristocratic residence and obviously governed by the planning restrictions for protected buildings – this is a converted 18th century palace after all. If you are a single traveller, you will be utterly delighted by the stunning single room (actually it is a large double by most Hotel standards)!!

An ideal Hotel for those who want a grand historical building on an intimate scale. Its location is ideal for discovering the best that Madrid has to offer.

The Hotel has been featured in numerous “glossy” magazines and was a “Little Gem 2004” in the Tatler Magazine’s article on the Best 101 Hotels.
