A DIP AT THE PALACE ..............

As you stand outside the Hotel Las Casas del Consul peering through the gated glass front door at a vase of strategically placed lilies in the covered patio courtyard, you somehow get the feeling that you are about to enter somewhere special. You will not be disappointed. A huge amount of love and care has been lavished on this intimate 9 bedroomed Hotel by Manuel the owner and Director. It is a converted 18th century “palacete” in the magnificent Renaissance town of Ubeda. Baroque buildings abound in the historic quarter, a feast of architectural wonders that have been declared a UNESCO world heritage site (along with the neighbouring town of Baeza just ten minutes away). The Hotel is architecturally pleasing too and there is a 16th Century arch along one side of the glassed-in patio. Part of the Hotel is set into the old town stone walls which are even apparent in a couple of bedrooms and bathrooms. The Hotel is situated up a quiet no-through road and traffic noise is minimal.

The covered patio is the “heart” of the Hotel and provides a comfortable seating area with the gentle sound of rippling water from the fountain. The first floor galleries around the patio lead off to the bedrooms and provide yet more seating areas. The Hotel is filled with an eclectic mix of modern and antique furniture, paintings and objects. The use of natural light is very effective.

A novelty for a town centre Hotel is the garden, covered terrace and swimming pool – a little haven away from sightseeing and a wonderful place for a refreshing dip when the weather is hot.

The 9 bedrooms are all different. The suite is a “split level” room with the bed on the upper floor. There are eight other rooms, four doubles and four twins. They are all beautifully decorated using light toned fabrics and again the modernist feel is prevalent. Some have bathrooms and some only showers. These too are wonderful, with stone or marble walls and eye-catching sinks. All have heating, air-conditioning and WiFi. There are flat screen televisions too, although no satellite TV as yet.

Breakfasts are served at your leisure in the breakfast room – a glass-sided room overlooking the alleyway on which the hotel sits. It feels as if you are staying with family, rather than in a Hotel and Manuel and his staff are very friendly. There is no lunch or dinner service, but plenty of restaurants are within easy walking distance of the Hotel. Manuel is more than happy to provide recommendations.

An ideal Hotel for those who want a peaceful, intimate hideaway in this architectural masterpiece of a town. Spaniards ”in the know” tend to fill this special Hotel at the weekends booking quite a long way in advance and consequently we recommend Sunday to Thursday sojourns.

Opened in 2005, the Hotel has already appeared in up-market travel/lifestyle magazines such as Conde Nast Traveller and Casa y Campo.
