ZINC AND ZEN ..............

Located on the western edge of the chic Eixample district just a 15 minute stroll to the Plaza de Catalunya and Las Ramblas stands Villa Emilia. I love the location of this Hotel in a “genteel” residential part of the city, just a block away from the Rocafort metro stop. I suppose it depends on what you are looking for, but I personally felt very much at ease staying in this friendly neighborhood of young trendy professionals walking their dogs and couples out on the Tapas Trail. It has the “true” Barcelona feel about it as opposed to the more touristy areas and one feels safe amongst the locals going about their daily routines. Great shops and a good vibrant street café/restaurant “vibe” in the area too. Definitely a place in which to live like a local!

The Hotel is in the chic design “mould” and one enters directly off the street into the open-plan reception/cocktail bar and restaurant area. Creams, dark brown and aubergine colours are the order of the day in decoration along with striking black crystal chandeliers. A Grand piano sets the mood with an occasional live player or the tinkling of keys on tape playing seductively in the background. There is even an inviting fireplace. The communal areas were always bustling when I was there. Reception staff were delightful and provide a good concierge service advising on things to do, how to get around the city (the Metro system is one of the most efficient and easiest to negotiate that I know!) and restaurant and tapas recommendations in the local area and further afield. They even have a small selection of local products such as cava for you to purchase.

The communal areas continue up to the floor above where there is a small business centre with 2 computers available for guests’ use and a space where coffee, tea and cakes are served as a complimentary service to guests between 5.00 and 7.00pm, giving plenty of time for a shower and a change of clothes before heading out for tapas or a late evening dinner (remember that most restaurants do not start serving until 9.00pm at the earliest in this city!).

On the ground floor (by the piano of course) is the “Zinc” cocktail bar and this again attracts an eclectic mix of locals and Hotel guests alike. Beyond that is the Hotel restaurant where a buffet breakfast is laid out for Hotel guests, including Cava – start the day with a Buck's Fizz???? Lunch and dinner are also served in the restaurant.

Hotel guests have the use of a chill-out roof terrace bar. In the warmer months a bar service is available here and it is a pleasant area for a snack or an excellently made pre-dinner Mojito, or an after dinner tipple by candlelight. Smoking is not permitted in the Hotel in any area except for this roof terrace. A couple of nights a week in the summer they offer a barbecue with wine to clients on the roof terrace for a reasonable price.

The 53 bedrooms are spread over 6 floors (lift available of course). There are all the same category, some with double beds and some with twin beds (please specify your choice when booking). I found them to be of a good size for the city and loved the lightness (especially of the rooms overlooking the street which were excellently insulated against street noise). Some of these had French doors onto small “Romeo and Juliet” style balconies which is another nice feature. They are all decorated with a “Zen” feel in creams and beiges, dark chocolate drapes on the windows and all seem to take a small influence in some way from Africa or the Orient (a detail appears in each room). Satellite TV, Wi-Fi internet access (get your username and room password from reception), heating, air-con, mini-bar and safe are in all rooms. Some rooms have baths and some have walk-in showers – loads of fluffy towels, H2O toiletries and a hair-dryer are provided.

There are three bedroome especially adapted for wheel chair users with rool in showers, grab bars etc.

An ideal Hotel for those who want to escape the tourist areas and stay in a chic Hotel in a trendy neighbourhood, and experience a true taste of daily Catalan city life. It is such a short walk to the sites anyway, and that Metro really is a marvel for getting around with ease! A good price/quality ratio too!
