di”V”ine...........

Once upon a time not so long ago, a young boy by the name of Jean Van Gysel would come with his family from Belgium to spend his summers at their holiday home, just outside the magical whitewashed village of Vejer de la Frontera – a town that perches peacefully above south-western Spain’s Atlantic coast, above the breathtaking, unspoilt beaches of the “Costa de la Luz”. It is no wonder why Jean fell in love with Vejer – as if having been plucked from a fairy-tale, its fortified historical quarter with its meandering maze of narrow, cobbled streets lined with delightful shops and charming houses, the town retains its mysitcal Moorish feel from centuries past. Jean, now a savvy businessman with a passion – and obvious talent – for architecture and interior design, has trasformed this 17th Century house into Hotel V..., a divine, “drop-dead gorgeous” haven of peace and tranquility.

When I stepped into Hotel V... I am not sure what impressed me most – the warmest and most caring of welcomes from the lovely multi-lingual Belgian manager Eline, or the calm that instantly came over me...along with a sigh of “wow”...the butterflies in my tummy went aflutter on realising that I had just walked into a truly exceptional place. Eline and I walk through reception I am immediately taken aback as we step into the beautiful open-air courtyard – a few tables and chairs dot the lawned garden in the centre and an array of greenery surrounds. My eyes are taken on an architectural journey up the magnificent stone columns, over the stunning original archways, back down to the bottom of the meandering staircase (no lift) which leads to the bedrooms and, to the “coup de théâtre” of the Hotel – a spectacular multi-level roof terrace on the 3rd floor. A true oasis with the most splendid panoramic views over Vejer, the rolling countryside, the Atlantic coastline and Morocco on a clear day! A gurgling sunken Jacuzzi at the edge of the roof terrace will have you feeling like you are sitting – or “soaking” rather! – on top of the world. Sun beds are plentiful, and there are even a few that perch in a wading pool with a small waterfall at one end – a refreshing place for dipping the toes whilst enjoying some sunbathing. Soft drinks are available in the roof terrace honesty bar, or a member of staff will pop up once in a while to take orders for stronger tipples.

Coming back inside, pure, clean lines combine with a brilliant use of space and light, together creating a heart-wearming effect of drama and romance. Add to the impeccable design a colour scheme of creams, beiges and muted tones, patches of exposed stone and beamed ceilings, and the result is one of soulful serenity. This rest-inspiring décor is apparent in each of the 12 elegant bedrooms – 5 Classic Doubles, 6 Superior Doubles and 1 Exclusive Double room. All are of comfortable dimensions – some slightly smaller or narrower than the others, obviously confined to the structure of the original building. A couple of the Standard rooms are not as “light” as the Superiors, but they are none the less luxurious. The Exclusive Double room has the added features of its own entrance on the 3rd floor and its own terrace. One Standard room off the ground floor patio has been adapted for wheelchair access, and features a private lawned terrace complete with its own olive tree!

Of the five Classic Double rooms, two have baths and the others have showers. The Superior Doubles all have baths and some have both bath and shower. The bathrooms in all of the rooms are integrated into the bedrooms (some are slightly more private), so for the more modest guests we will happily request a room with a less “revealing” arrangement. Handsome furnishings, restored antiques and big double beds (all are Queen or King except for one Classic and one Superior room which have twin beds) topped with the best linens compliment the sumptuous feel. Fully equipped, as one would expect from a luxury Boutique Hotel, with under-floor heating, air-con, satellite TV, CD, DVD, Wi-Fi and telephone. The Superior and Exclusive rooms have mini-bars, which are stocked with a superb selection of gourmet water, exclusive wines and Belgian chocolates. Ayurvedic toiletries, slippers and fluffy bathrobes are provided in all the rooms, and nightly turn-down service is yet another lovely touch.

Breakfast is not your standard hotel breakfast affair at Hotel V. No need to worry about rushing to the buffet before it is cleared away – because there isn’t one! Fancy breakfast in bed? How about on the roof terrace accompanied by those sublime panoramas? Or perhaps you prefer in the patio garden or indoors in the inviting salon. You name the place and your individual breakfast tray will be delivered whenever, and to wherever you wish to start your day – now that’s what I call civilised. For lunches and dinners, Vejer has a host of restaurants that Oliva and her cheerful team will happily recommend and reserve for you.

For some extra pampering, Ayurvedic massages can be reserved in advance and taken in the Hotel’s massage treatment room which is found in the original well of the house, discovered during the restoration and laboriously chipped away from the inside out. A 40-step spiral staircase was installed and clearly takes the mind, body and soul to a whole different level!

An ideal Hotel for anyone looking for a divine and special place in which to unwind and be genuinely cared for, whether for a romantic escape, or a stop on a tour through Andalucia.
