Once upon a time, Lee, a young barrister from London, travelled to Vejer de la Frontera to learn Spanish at the local language school. The young Amelia, owner of a catering company in England’s capital city, also desired to learn Spanish, and so she too journeyed to Andalucia to attend the language school of Vejer. Little did Lee or Amelia know that it is here where Cupid’s arrow would strike, that they would soon marry and leave their respective careers in the UK behind to create this unique Boutique Hotel. Three years of intensive planning, restoration, building and most importantly, love, along with inspiration gathered from their extensive travels, have together transformed this old farmhouse in the sleepy hamlet of Los Parralejos into a laid-back, romantic hideaway.

On winding my way down the country road into Los Parralejos, the unique and unmistakeable façade of Casa la Siesta came into view and I knew I was in for a treat. The iron gate slid open, the cockle-doodle-doo of the roosters at the neighbouring house welcomed me to the countryside and “Roly”, Lee and Amelia’s friendly little pooch was waiting to greet me. The massive antique double doors ajar, I was beckoned inside to instantly release a sigh of “wow”. After a very warm welcome from Lee and Amelia, relaxation set in as my eyes began to wander through the long open-plan salon and dining area. To one end, wing-back chairs and sofas in front of the open fireplace made me wish it was wintertime – a great place to snuggle up in the colder months or simply chill out with a book at any time of year. Ceilngs lined with antique pine beams, archways of fanned bricks and floors of reclaimed Moroccan tiles retain the rustic charm. A colour scheme of creams and beiges enhances the feeling of space and light. Add to this the subtle contemporary touches in the décor, and the result? Cool rustic luxury.

French doors lead out to the large, tranquil, tree-lined courtyard and terraces. Peaceful views of the rolling hills beyond have a calming effect; vistas which of course can also be enjoyed from the sun loungers next to the heated infinity pool!

Now let’s talk bedrooms. There’s that sigh of “wow” again. The calming colour scheme and rustic chic décor continue into all 7 generously proportioned bedrooms (and one "Casita" - read on for more!!), which comprise of 3 Doubles, 3 Suites and 1 Superior Suite. All are mimimally furnished but anything more would ruin the effect. Hand-polished tadalakt walls, more beamed ceilings and antique tiles, stripped wood shutters and distressed furnishings maintain the rustic feel, but creature comforts are most certainly not foresaken. Each room features a terrace (with the exception of one Double room) benefitting from the lovely views. King-size beds are dressed in Egyptian cotton and topped with fluffy duvets – the kind that make you pull up the covers and say, “Just a little bit longer....”. The one Superior Suite features a double rain shower and a separate bath, and the pièce de résistance, the “superior” views through the large picture window that give this Suite its name. All the other Suites have walk-in rain showers and separate, open-plan roll-top baths. One Suite also features a free-standing, wood buring fireplace. All the rooms are equipped with air-con, underfloor heating, i-pod docking stations, hairdryers, bathrobes and towels of a superb quality, and luxurious “Ren” toiletries to top things off! The attention to detail will not go unnoticed – pre-stamped postcards and pre-loaded i-pods provided on arrival speak volumes of the emphasis placed on the “personal touch”.

For anyone looking for extra privacy and independence, the "Casita de la Siesta" is an ideal option. This is a one (or 2) bedroomed Suite with kitchen, dining room and salon, as well as a private heated pool, private terrace and private gardens.

Breakfasts are served at your leisure until the highly civilised hour of 11:00am, and can be taken wherever your heart desires - at the long communal dining table, in the privacy of your own room, or on one of the exterior terraces in the warmer months. Light lunches can be arranged with some advance notice. Food and wine complete the feel good factor at Casa La Siesta. A set 3-course menu is on offer each night (please book in for dinner each morning if you would like to dine in!). An eclectic mix of international dishes are lovingly created and prepared, using the freshest local ingredients around, and as much possible produce from the Hotel’s own veggie garden. Down the staircase from the dining area you will find a “bodega” stocked with a unique collection of Spanish (and some international) wines which you can sample and select to savour with your meal. Dinners are typically served at the communal table but if you fancy an intimate dinner under the stars in the courtyard, all you need do is ask!

The location is excellent – only a few kilometres from one of Andalucia´s pretty whitewashed villages, Vejer de la Frontera, and 15 minutes by car to the sensational El Palmar beach, just one of the unspoilt sandy surfs the Costa de la Luz is so famous for – Spain´s beaches do not get much better than this!! If you are looking for nightlife or dinner out, Vejer is the place to go. As for activities (that is if you can be tempted away from the comforts of the Hotel!) one is spoilt for choice in the way of things to see and do in the area. Horse riding (in the next hamlet), yoga and massages can be arranged, as can a private tour to a local sherry bodega. Jerez and Cádiz are fantastic day-trip destinations, as is Morocco – Tangier is just 40 minutes on the high-speed catamaran from Tarifa!

An ideal Hotel for those who want an intimate retreat “away from it all”. The refined hush is enhanced by the fact that the Hotel does not accept children under 15. A place to relax, a place to recharge, and most definitely a place to romance!!
