OSCAR "WILD".............

Reading Gaol was never quite like this. Smack-dab at the crossroads between two of the most action-packed areas of the city, Room Mate Oscar seamlessly unites the bustling Gran Via and the ever lively “Chueca” neighbourhood with its designer shops and boutiques, hip cafés and restaurants and non-stop gay nightlife. From Oscar’s doorstep it is a ten minute walk to many of Madrid’s most impressive sites and offerings including the “Golden Triangle” of museums (The Prado, Reina Sofia and Thyssen-Bornemisza), the Puerta del Sol, Plaza Mayor and Plaza de España. A couple of minutes on foot and the metro will take you anywhere else you need to go (the Chueca and Gran Via stations are very closeby). The Room Mate Hotels do know how to choose their locations!

At the edge of the Plaza Vázquez de Mella, sliding glass doors sweep open to reveal Oscar in all of “his” facets and features. Design shouts from every corner of the long and lofty, luminous lobby. Designer Tomás Alía’s striking use of lines and textures offers a playful yet sophisticated setting that in no way lacks in the wow-factor category. Add to this the unique lighting – if the foyer is blue one day and red the next, not to worry, it’s all part of the funky and flirtatious design concept and not a figment of your imagination! Reception is at the far end, and as with all the Room Mate Hotels, the young and trendy staff, clad in laid-back black attire are always helpful in making sure you have all the details of local events, museums, restaurants, etc, to enjoy your time in this exciting city to the full.

With 71 bedrooms (and two Suites with terraces pending completion) this is the largest of the Room Mate Hotels, but built over 7 floors and each floor with its own fun colour and flare, one does not have the feeling of being in a large hotel. Neon-lit corridors give way to fashionably designed rooms in which colour, space and light are playfully combined. Rooms comprise of 6 Junior Suites, and the rest are divided amongst Standard and Executive Doubles. The Standard rooms are the smallest (although not unreasonably so for a city hotel!) but for those who enjoy some extra space we advise at least an Executive Double. My “funky green” Executive room was of generous proportions and overlooked the adjacent road (with passing traffic it was pleasantly quiet – I slept like a baby!!) and I loved the Junior Suites with their highly original, sexy wraparound sofas! Bathrooms (mostly with shower and some of which are semi-open-plan) are compact and functional with the obligatory modern fixtures and fittings. All bedrooms come equipped with individual heating and air-con, direct telephone, complementary Wi-Fi access, flat-screen satellite TV, mini-bar and safe.

Ample buffet breakfasts are included in the room rate (a rarity in city hotels these days!) and are served in the stylishly designed 1st floor breakfast room overlooking the square – a great vantagepoint for people-watching from your swivel chair as the new day begins and life takes to the streets. If you have been partying into the wee hours, have a lie-in...breakfast is served until mid-day! Lines, shapes and textures combine in futuristic fashion, with accompanying chill-out music completing the effect.

For tasty tapas and titbits, try Oscar’s bar and restaurant on the ground floor – appropriately named “Gift” for its value for money. Traditional food with a fun twist is served for lunch and dinner from Tuesdays to Saturday and is as much a hit amongst the locals as it is with the Hotel’s guests. Also hugely popular amongst the locals “in-the-know”: the roof terrace, “Splash”. Open in the summer months, this is a veritable oasis in the city wth plunge pool and sleek sun loungers, interspersed with patches of artificial grass and comfortable cushions. Use of the roof terrace is charged as an extra by the Hotel, but access is free from 8:00pm until last call at 10:30pm. Do get there early as it can quickly reach maximum capacity!! Remember, diners eat late in Madrid with many restaurants not opening their doors until 9.30pm so the roof terrace bar is an ideal place to “Splash” out on a pre-dinner drink.

An ideal Hotel for business or pleasure (or both!) and for those who want funky, fashionable accommodation in a superb location, albeit without the premium price tag that normally comes with this cosmopolitan capital city.
