OH, SO EXCLUSIVE ..............

Three bedrooms, yes, just three – do boutique Hotels become more and exclusive and intimate than this? I have yet to find a two-bedroomed one! This third and latest offering from Italian stylist Giovanni Cinel is as equally impressive as his other Riads, both of which we feature on our website, Riad 72 and Riad “Due”. It is probably the hardest to find and for that reason, as with 99% of our Riads in Marrakech, I do strongly recommend the taxi transfer service from the airport that can be booked with us when you make your reservation. Located down an alley, in the heart of the Medina, you are in the centre of everything – shops, restaurants, hammams surround you and the bustling Jemaa El Fna Square is just under a ten minute walk away through the maze of the Souk.

The traditional patio courtyard and plunge pool greet you as you enter through the large wooden doors from the street. It is very striking with its strategically placed minimalist furniture, lanterns and potted plants. A wonderful plunge pool sits in the centre. You are just beckoned to sit down and take it all in, and please do, because the lovely staff will bring you jasmine water to wash your hands, sweet mint tea and home-made Moroccan pastries and biscuits. This is a wonderful “touch” on arrival at this exquisite place. The staff give explanations of what is on offer, shopping tips, visits to the dessert or the High Atlas Mountains etc. They also explain how they are on call throughout the day in the Hotel and will cater to your every whim, but from 10pm they do go home, but leave you a mobile telephone in case you need anything. .Again, the patio takes on a different atmosphere at night with the pool lit, atmospheric lighting and those “oh so romantic” candles.

With just three bedrooms, the atmosphere is calm and tranquil – in fact when I was there I never saw another guest, just the staff. As I was working, I needed time and space to organize the mountain of paperwork and the salon (traditionally used for entertaining in days gone by) proved an excellent choice with its warming, roaring log fire (I was there in December with outside temperatures of 25 degrees Celsius during the day, but, oh boy, does the thermometer drop at night!). A further salon (again minimalist in design) with a striking glass topped table is now used for dining.

As with most Riads, there is a roof terrace for taking the sun and lounging around. It is up a few flights of stairs, and the staff have obligingly provided a bell that summons them should you want that light lunch, chilled white wine or a G and T. Guests at Riad 12 can reserve the Hammam at Riad 72 during their stay (unless Riad 72 is under exclusive use)

The 3 bedrooms, a single and two doubles (one double with a four-poster) are contemporary in style. Spacious and funky with great lighting. The bathrooms or showers are “sexy” – my shower head was the size of a large plate. What really makes them amazing is Giovanni’s incredible use of natural light which he has managed to “duct” in through various channels from the roof. When this natural light goes, candles and rose petals will adorn your bathing area. No satellite TVs or hi-tech facilities. Who needs those in Marrakech? Slippers, bathrobes and gorgeous toiletries, shampoos, gels and soothing body lotions are all provided.

Breakfasts are served wherever you wish and if you tell the Hotel in advance, delicious light lunches or romantic candle-lit dinners will be provided – and very good they are too – Moroccan cuisine is such a joy!. Afternoon tea is complimentary during your stay and served on a daily basis. I was given a “goodie bag” of the home-made cookies and pastries for my journey South as I left – another lovely touch!

An ideal Hotel for those who want to be thoroughly spoilt by the staff and get away from it all, including other people – goodness knows, there are enough “other people” in Marrakech. Reflect on peace and tranquility in this private “bolt-hole” as you recuperate from the often overwhelming assault on your senses that is the heart and soul of this magnificent destination.
