SMALL IS BEAUTIFUL ..............

If you are looking for creature comforts, this is another little gem – and by little, I mean little – just four bedrooms but with excellent facilities. Located in the old antique quarter of Bab Doukala down a small alley some 15 minutes by foot to the Jemaa El Fna square. It is an intimate, small palace but definitely elegant and refined. This time an Italian interior designer is responsible for the conversion to a “chic boutique” Hotel. Giovanni Cinel is indeed having fun in Marrakech – this was the first foray into Morocco and Giovanni now has three Riads, (all of which we feature; Riad Due and Riad 12 being the other two). The trademark is minimalist décor and clean lines – “Simplicity is an art” – but somehow the stylist has managed to create a homely and welcoming atmosphere with sleek furnishings, without the cold feeling that you sometimes experience with minimalist Hotels.

The centerpiece has to be the stunning patio which greets you on stepping through the large wooden doors from the alley. An immense banana tree reaches for the stars and a tinkling fountain invites rest on the rattan sofas and chairs. Mint tea is provided free of charge all day long by the attentive staff.

The roof terrace is claimed as the highest in Marrakech (do not think I would argue with that!!!) and the views of the rooftops with the many minarets is magnificent. The snow capped Atlas mountains are normally visible at dawn, and dusk in the winter months. A small rooftop plunge pool is an excellent place to cool off after taking the sun on one of the loungers. There is also a Hammam (steam bath) where you an be scrubbed with the deep cleansing and exfoliating black soap that is so well known in Morocco, before pampering yourself with a massage (reservations required).

The 4 bedrooms continue the minimalist Zen-European theme. Named the “Lile Bridal Room”, (the smallest), followed by the two luxury doubles called “Amal” and “Zawha” and then the “Kama Suite”. As much as I loved all four rooms (Amal especially caught my eye with its very large bath!) there is really only one way to describe the Kama Suite – huge! In fact on all my Hotel visits I think I have only ever seen one larger (in my favourite Spa Hotel in Spain). The ceiling, an ornate carved wooden masterpiece, must be almost 20 feet high and in the middle of it is a wonderful cupola. Add to that a wonderful “tadlakt” bathroom – the trademark powdered marble and plaster mix that gives the walls such a luscious, luminous quality – and you have a real honeymoon Suite.

Breakfasts are served at your leisure in any area of the Hotel as are lunches and dinners. You do need to let the staff know if you will be eating lunch in the Hotel whilst you are having breakfast, and please reserve your table for dinner by 2pm. This gives Fatima, the very talented Chef, time to go out and buy the freshest of ingredients and prepare your delicious Moroccan meal. Many guests put her cuisine on a par with the best restaurants in the city. Room service is also available throughout the day (although limited after midnight).

Hats off to the staff who seem to have got it just right; never intrusive, but always there. Mustafa the Manager is knowledgeable on all aspects of Marrakech and very ably backed up by Brahim and Aziz. The two young ladies in charge of cleaning and keeping things spic and span have an incredible knack of doing this whilst rarely being seen.

An ideal Hotel for those who want intimacy in a boutique Hotel. Great location for shopping and caring and attentive service with a smile. Good value for money amongst Marrakech's chic boutique Hotels.
