ALL IN GOOD TASTE ..............

Situated in the heart of the Medina, about a three minute walk to the famed Jmaa El Fna Square with its perpetual show of snake charmers, acrobats, musicians, fortune tellers and tooth pullers, the Riad Monceau is a haven of peace and tranquility. The Riads in the city fall into two categories for me – the very traditional and the designer chic. Riad Monceau is a traditional conversion of a 19th Century Riad, restored in 2002 and is exquisite. It is owned by the renowned French artist, Isabelle Aubrey who exhibits some of her creations here. It is located down a small alley and a whole different world lies within. Under the watchful eye of the “hands-on” Belgian managers, Ludovic and his lovely wife, the clientele is international and a host of repeat clients bear witness to their success. A contented client is a repeat client!!!

Those traditional dark wooden antique doors open to a small reception area which leads you through to the “coup de théâtre” – a typical central patio (mosaics and marble) with plunge pool and fountain that is especially spectacular at night when flickering candles and ambient lighting set the mood. Warm and cosy in winter, and cooling during the intense heat of summer, it is a very welcoming and beautiful place.

As with almost all the Riads we feature, all stairs lead to the roof terrace from which views of this city’s myriad of minarets and the Atlas Mountains can be enjoyed. Comfortable seating and eating areas are provided; take the sun or sip on a chilled glass of Moroccan wine (some of which are surprisingly good!).

The 7 bedrooms, whilst not all large, (some obviously confined by the size of the original Riad), are dotted around the central patio over two floors, and have been beautifully restored. They are simply furnished, but nonetheless eye catching. The Junior Suite "Pasha" with its own Jacuzzi is the largest of course, followed by the Superior Double Rooms and then the Standard Doubles. All have en-suite bathrooms and come equipped with heating and air-con, satellite TV, Wi-Fi, mini-bar and safe.

Breakfasts are served at your leisure in the main dining room overlooking the patio (it can also be taken on the roof terrace or in the patio courtyard itself). The Hotel prides itself on a very high level of service and cuisine and the restaurant which is open to the public by reservation only has gained an excellent reputation as one of the best eateries in Marrakech. Light lunches are available on request and the Chef serves up a nightly menu of Moroccan cuisine. Dishes such as pigeon in a pastry parcel served with almonds, Atlas Mountain quail tagine with poached pears or a tangy citrus fruit salad with orange essence will surely delight! The setting for dinner is truly romantic and there is a small bar for “pre” or “après” dinner drinks. The Riad also hosts several “piano nights” during the month which also enhances the romantic atmosphere.

An ideal Hotel for those who want a calming retreat with good service and cuisine in close proximity to the Medina, the Souks and the main square – a shopping paradise! Location does not get much better than this!
