This very classical Riad was one of the original Boutique Hotels and is possible the most “typical” in style of the Riads we feature. Set in the old antique quarter of Marrakech, Bab Doukala, situated down a quiet alley, the surrounding area is a delight – shop till you drop! Then return here to recuperate! Tradition oozes from every corner. The mint tea, sipped, as you sit on a cushion surrounded by gorgeous rugs in the stunning patio courtyard on arrival, is the “classic Moroccan welcome”.

The glorious patio courtyard (with obligatory rose-petal filled fountain), surrounded by those beautiful hand painted tiles that we all want for our own patios, act as the stunning centerpiece in the Riad. Alhambra style arches surround the courtyard. Moroccan lamps abound and when lit by candle at night, the atmosphere is complete! To one side, the salon (used for entertaining in the past by the original owners) continues the very “Arab” feel with its fine carved Mudejar ceiling. A working fireplace beckons you hither in the winter months.

There is a further small patio which now serves as a library.

The roof terrace is a wonderful place to relax and unwind after the intensity of a sightseeing trip. Sun-beds are provided to soak up the sun or you can seek the shade of the Moroccan tent. Potted plants and palms complete the décor. The views are lovely, especially as the sun sets over the myriad of minarets and as far as the High Atlas Mountains. Ambient music plays soothingly in the background.

The 11 bedrooms, whilst not the largest (obviously confined by the size of the original Riad) but still of a good size, continue the classic Moroccan theme. There are 7 Suites and 4 Deluxe Doubles, all have en-suite bathrooms. There is now a Spa and small swimming pool. Although “classic” in style, modern luxuries are the norm – Satellite TV, Wi-Fi (a laptop is available for clients use), heating, air-con, and safe. Bathrooms are of a good size and bathrobes and toiletries are provided. There are no mini-bars in the rooms but the staff will gladly provide you with any non-alcoholic drinks throughout your stay and these are included in the room rate. Complimentary fresh fruit is also placed in your room. The rooms are dark; please do not expect views – traditional Riads were built that way!! The intense heat of the summer months is kept at bay by allowing as little light into the building as possible. I loved the Amber Suite set over two floors with its salon and fireplace. This also applies to one of the Deluxe Doubles where there is a working fireplace in the bedroom.

Breakfasts are served at your leisure in one of the ground floor salons overlooking the patio or in fact in the location of your choice. On offer are 3 or 4 different types of breads, yogurt, some sort of light entree (eggs, pancakes, cereal, etc.), coffee, tea, and freshly squeezed orange juice. Light lunches and exotic Moroccan dinners are available, but should be booked in advance. The staff will cater to your every whim and will serve drinks, etc. throughout the day – just ask! The receptionists will also arrange guides for the Medina, day trips to the Atlas Mountains, camel rides, restaurant reservations, shopping trips, etc. Transfer from the airport is included in the room rate.

An ideal Hotel for those who want a small Riad where you can really take in the atmosphere of traditional Marrakech. Charming staff and friendly, unobtrusive service. Once the Spa and Pool are open – the runaway success of Riad Kniza will be unstoppable!
