COOL COUNTRY CHARM...........

Less than 30 minutes from Gran Canaria’s Airport and a mere 10 minutes from the capital city of Las Palmas, the tiny village of La Calzada nestles amongst fertile and scenic landscapes in the heart of the Guiniguada Valley. In 2004, the Sicilia family purchased this early 20th century farm house, and following complete restoration, the final result is a quaint, small Hotel that takes its name after the hillock of volcanic rock, or “Maipez”, on which it stands.

A long, stone driveway curves its way up from the main road to the entrance of the Hotel where a sprawling, centuries old bay tree shades the exterior terraces and galleried garden restaurant. Step through the wooden doors and one will find that rest beckons behind those yellow ochre walls. On the left is a small salon (with satellite TV) and the feeling at first is one of simplicity, which then converts to “cool” as the tour continues.......

The Hotel’s 10 bedrooms, are all a unique and delightful surprise. Comprising of 7 Doubles, one Double with terrace and two very large Suites, the décor varies from charmingly rustic to country chic. The crisp, clean, uncluttered spaces are like a breath of fresh air, further complemented by beamed ceilings, light-coloured tiles or wooden floors, and cream-coloured walls from which patches of exposed stone seem to peek out in all the right places. Tasteful patterned fabrics and wooden or wrought iron furnishings add a touch of class. The en-suite bathrooms are just as lovely, some of which have a shower and the others a bath. Rooms are modestly equipped with TV (no satellite) and heating for when the nights are cooler.

Simple buffet breakfasts are served in the “sweet” little breakfast room on the ground floor next to the kitchen. A fixed 3-course menu of traditional Spanish cuisine can be ordered each day (with some advance notice). The restaurant is closed on Mondays.

The adjoining property to the Hotel is home to the La Calzada Tennis Club, where there is a cafeteria open all day, and where guests of the Hotel receive reduced rates on court fees and equipment rental. A hire car is definitely recommended for exploring the surroundings, unless you'd rather enjoy the Canarian sunshine from the Hotel`s outdoor swimming pool. Please note the pool is unheated.

We feel we should point out that Maipez is not a highly staffed Hotel. There will always be a member of staff contactable on duty throughout the day, although their labours are divided between all aspects of this family run Hotel. A member of staff also sleeps in the Hotel overnight so you are not on your own in the case of an emergency. During breakfast, there are obviously more staff members in attendance.

An ideal Hotel for those who enjoy lovely, rural accommodation in a tranquil, natural setting. The moderate, year round temperatures of Gran Canaria make escaping the hustle and bustle just that much easier!
