FROM “P.R.” TO PARADISE ..............

As the craze for “designer” Hotels continues, it is always a pleasure to walk into somewhere that little bit special. Owners Tania and Paul Slijper changed successful careers in public relations and marketing in the UK for the charming old town of Soller. Their task - to take a 100 hundred year old, but very grand (art deco) mansion in one of the main tree-lined avenues and turn it into a chic and ultra cool Hotel. A remarkable achievement in a very short period of time has lead to the opening of one of the island’s most high profile boutique Hotels. A roll-call of the best contemporary designers around, Tania has had a field day blending the contemporary with the old using her wit and an exacting eye for detail. She has shopped in major European cities for furnishings and fabrics – the end result being a “drop-dead gorgeous” haven in this small and characterful town.

As you enter the hallway, a small, “funky” reception desk is on your right, but the hardwood floors, stylish staircase and minimalist “objets” shout design from every corner. A few steps up the beautifully restored deco staircase lead you to the mezzanine landing with a stunning salon to your left – mainly white and black – an eclectic mix of more of the best from the design houses of Europe and wonderful French doors leading onto a small balcony.

This balcony leads to the “coup de théâtre” of the Hotel – a wonderful view of the patio garden and swimming pool. A true oasis surrounded by village houses – it is a fabulous place for a spot of sun-bathing or a "sundowner".

There are 9 bedrooms in total (2 Luxury Suites, 2 Junior suites, 2 Superior, a Superior Duplex and 2 Standard Doubles) and they would be best described as “elegant modernist”. Tania has been out shopping again and the rooms are adorned with rich Parisian and Italian fabrics and some outrageous wallpapers from Cole and Sons. The rooms feel large and uncluttered (but very welcoming) with their high ceilings and dark wooden floors and the design feel continues with Kartell bedside lamps and Phillip Stark bathrooms – each room is different and all are a delight. Big Double beds (no twins), the best linens and bathroom toiletries compliment the sumptuous feel. “Lavish” is another word that springs to mind. Fully equipped, as one would expect from a “premier” Hotel, with heating, air-con, satelite TV, DVD’s, Wi-Fi, mini-bar, safe, up-market toiletries, slippers and fluffy bathrobes. The suites are ideally suited for honeymooners. I especially loved the roll-top baths in two of these rooms. On the upper floors (there are three floors, and no lift); some of the rooms have views over the tree-lined avenue to the peaks of the Tramuntana mountains.

Continental breakfasts are served at your leisure in the main dining room (L’Avenida Bistro) or in the patio garden (which is one floor below the reception). Home-made muesli is complimented by local jams, honeys, cheeses and hams. The dining room is in stark contrast to the creams and whites of the floors above with an emphasis on black. One wall is attractively painted by local artist Ralph Headley who has lived on the island for many years. Light lunches are on offer on the terrace and in the warmer months Phillip hosts an imaginative paella evening on Tuesday nights and a barbecue by the pool on Thursday nights. Tania and her staff continually receive praise for some astounding restaurant recommendations in the area so you will not go hungry on other nights! There is also a “bodega” fully stocked with the best local wines and tastings are available.

The Hotel does not accept children under the age of 14 and requires a three night minimum stay from 1st May to the 15th October. This also applies to the Easter week. Outiside of these times a two night minimum stay is required.

An ideal Hotel for those who want a “design” experience in a lovely Mallorquin town. You will be pampered and adored by Tania, Paul and the team. The opening of the Soller/Palma tunnel some few years ago now means that Palma is a mere 20 minutes away and this is an excellent choice for a long weekend break. It is an easy trip by tram from Soller town to the Port of Soller and the sea. Great walks in the area too.

The Hotel has been nominated for several design awards.
