AN ERUPTION OF SPIRITUALITY..........

Amidst the stunning lunar landscape of southern Lanzarote, just below the “fire mountains” of the Timanfaya National Park and the fertile crater-like vinyards of La Geria, the tiny hillside hamlet of El Morro (pertaining to the neighbouring whitewashed village of Uga) holds a secret behind the sprawling bouganvillas, palms and eucalyptus trees that mark its entrance. This secret is Casa el Morro, an 18th Century farm that underwent three years of painstaking restoration to be resurrected from ruin and opened as a rather unique rural Hotel in 1998. Raquel, a native of Seville who has lived most of her life in Lanzarote, and her English partner Christopher, have created a spiritual, self-catering retreat where the emphasis is clearly on rest and relaxation. A dream realised.

Walking up the stairs to the main entrance and the terracotta tiled patio courtyard is like stepping into a tranquil oasis. The well tended gardens are expansive and potted plants abound – the love for nature is apparent from first glance. Also apparent is Raquel’s and Christopher’s love for travel and spirituality. Gorgeous, hand-carved Indonesian furnishings found in every nook and cranny of the property – from the patio courtyard to the swimming pool area and in each and every one of the 7 uniquely designed, self-contained houses that comprise this typical Canarian farmhouse – have been personally selected and imported on their travels throughout Southeast Asia.

The houses are simply yet tastefully decorated with attractive accessories like antique lamps and mirrors, four-poster wrought iron beds (in some rooms), Victorian baths, Arabic tiles rescued from old Andalucian patios and celings of volcanic rock, each house has its own unique feel. Most of the houses occupy the former farm’s granaries and animal sheds, and another, “Aljibe” is found in the excavated water deposit. With the exception of “Alpende” and “La Troja” which are situated off the patio courtyard, each house has its own large terrace from which to take in the salty sea air. All are equipped with a fully-fitted kitchen (as no meals are served at the Hotel), TV and stereo, and all but one have full en-suite bathroom. “Leo”, the newest house is the smallest but no less beautiful, has an en-suite shower room. The houses vary in size and comfortably accommodate from 2 to 5 guests (depending on the house) which make this an ideal self-catering holiday option for families. Buffet breakfasts are served at Casa el Morro, and Raquel will be happy to advise on nearby supermarkets for food shopping and restaurant recommendations for those who prefer to dine out for lunch and dinner. Raquel and Christopher live nearby and guests are provided with their mobile telephone number where they can be reached when they are not at the Hotel. If you need them they will be there for you, otherwise you will be left to contemplate this haven on your own.

To bring the spiritual experience to an even deeper level, massages, meditation and yoga sessions can all be arranged to take place in Casa el Morro’s own yurt, mellowed even further by the scents of incense and candles aglow.

Please note that the swimming pool is not heated so the temperature can be a liitle chilly when the Canarian sun does not do its work. Whilst the pool area does receive some noise from the occasional passing traffic on the adjacent country road, soothing sounds of relaxation and Indian music keep the pool-side aura in tune with the surroundings... how many pools have such a dramatic volcanic backdrop?

Their eco-friendly efforts are to be congratulated: window frames, ceilings and wood furnishings are all treated with non-toxic oils; lights are energy efficient; walls are “painted” with washes of limestone pigments and the garden is 100% biological.

An ideal Hotel if you are looking for a tranquil, natural and unique spiritual retreat in which to soak in the sunshine at any time of year. An excellent base from which to discover the secrets of this singular island.
