A PINCH OF SALT..............

At the edge of Yaiza, unarguably one of the prettiest villages of Lanzarote, lies an impressive 18th Century mansion that was acquired by Jaime Lleo, a pharmacist who dedicated his time to this island’s once booming industry of salt exportation. The salt mines, or “Salinas”, after which this estate appropriately takes its name may now be few, but the mansion lives on for guests to enjoy. Set just off the southernmost national road a mere 15 minutes from the Airport, whether for the sheer beauty of its architecture or the expansivness of its exotic gardens (clearly marked by Moorish influence) Las Salinas is sure to catch the eye of all passersby and delight all who set foot on this fertile finca.

Upon entering the Hotel I was enveloped by a feeling of warmth and cosiness. Walls “washed” in hues of ochre, cerise, golds and blue play no small part in the pleasing rustic décor. To one side of the reception area, clusters of wicker sofas and chairs are arranged around a large, glass-topped salon that bathes in natural daylight. To the other side, a bar and “bodega” where guests can enjoy both locally produced and mainland Spanish wines. Engage in conversation with other guests or pluck a book or magazine from the shelf for some peaceful afternoon reading. A large greenery-filled garden makes for an attractive centrepiece to the interior patio courtyard. The emphasis here is on rest and relaxation.

The warm colour scheme and rustic theme continues into the simply furnished, uncluttered rooms (of which there are 19), comprising of 2 Suites (situated in the main house), one Junior Suite and 15 Doubles. Two of the latter are also found in the main house and the remaining rooms, now occupying the converted animal sheds and stables, are arranged around the solar heated swimming pool. Views of the Timanfaya National Park can be appreciated from the rooms’ terraces which are separated by waist-level walls of volcanic rock. The Suites also have a terrace which occupies the porch (once the principal entrance to the house), overlooking the lovely manicured gardens that line the pathway leading down to the road and the mountains beyond. All are equipped with air-con (with cool/warm function), telephone, satellite TV, coffee and tea-making facilities, mini-bar, safe (rental charge applied), full en-suite bath, hair dryer, bathrobes and slippers. Internet access is available in a common area in the main house.

Breakfasts are served in the charming breakfast room, and for lunches and dinners guests have the choice of two à la carte restaurants: "Restaurante Mariateresa" offers an elaborate fusion of traditional and modern cuisine, and for lighter dishes and tasty tapas, try the "Bodega Dongonzalo" - both are under the watchful eye of renowned Chef Joaquim Koerper. The helpful staff will gladly provide suggestions for further dining options in the nearby area, as well as make arrangements for a variety of excursions, bike rental, etc.

Lanzarote’s small size makes for easy exploration, and after a day’s sightseeing including the golden sandy beaches of Playa Blanca (15 minutes by car) and Papagayo (30 minutes by car), the Timanafaya National Park and the nearby vineyards of La Geria, what better to come back to than a soak in the Jacuzzi or an invigourating sauna? For the body conscious a small gymnasium is available, and facilities for tennis, table tennis and billiards enthusiasts are also at hand.

An ideal Hotel if you are looking for a relaxing holiday away from the bustling tourist resorts. Winter sunshine complemented by pleasant accommodation, great facilities and an excellent base from which to discover Lanzarote in all its glory.
