At the edge of the town of Arucas and in the foothills of the once volcanic Mount Arucas, lies a sprawling 5000 acre agricultural “finca” blanketed by banana plantations. Dating back to 1572, this estate is in fact the oldest of all the Canary Islands. In the early 18th Century it was acquired by the Marquis of Arucas and has since remained in the family. The building itself was never actually used for living quarters but comprised of a multitude of animal sheds and storage rooms for all the necessary farming equipment used to work the land. In 1997, after extensive renovations under the watchful eye of the Marchioness, the Hacienda del Buen Suceso was transformed into the charming rural Hotel it is today.

I arrived at the Hotel at dusk and released a sigh of “wow” as I approached the Hotel with its wide, galleried archways beautifully lit like the backdrop of a theatrical set. The stage being the long and expansive cobbled terrace dotted with potted plants and clusters of wicker sofas, chairs and Indonesian furnishings (imported by none other than the Marchioness). To the opposite end the swimming pool (heated year round), encircled by plenty of sun loungers, glows a bright turquoise. All this surrounded by centuries old palm trees, hundreds of hibiscus blooms, sprawling ornamental greenery and a sea of banana plantations, their leaves swaying gently in the breeze. Off reception is a rather grand salon with fireplace where two large and inviting sofas tempt utter relaxation. Whilst there is not an overabundance of staff, service is professional and friendly.

The colonial ambiance continues into the simple yet smartly decorated bedrooms, of which there are 18. Comprising of Junior Suites and Doubles (most have twin beds), the rooms are pleasantly comfortable and uncluttered. The Junior Suites are set over two floors and have the added elegance of lovely, sloped beamed ceilings. Sea views can be enjoyed from most of the rooms. Embroidered fabrics top the beds, florals and checks cover tasteful furninshings, and floors are either of mahogany, carpeting or tile. Each room has a full en-suite bathroom, some larger than others (obviously confined to the structure of the original building) with a large, romantic, oval bath. All are equipped with TV (English options are limited), telephone, Wi-Fi internet access, bathrobes, electric radiator (for the odd chilly winter night), hairdryer and mini-bar. This is a no-smoking Hotel, except for on the exterior terraces.

The charming, split-level restaurant, “El Alpende”, found in the old animal shed, has undergone a remarkable renovation and the result is one of romance. Elongated gallery windows open onto an exterior patio where one can enjoy an afternoon snack or dine “al fresco”. The old feeding troughs have also been restored and are cleverly used for none other than the breakfast buffet! For lunches and diinners, a good selection of starters, main courses and desserts are on offer. Local and traditional cuisine with a “twist” is tasty and well presented. For more variety, Arucas is only a few minutes drive away.

Following a day’s sightseeing or simply for a session of self-indulgence, enjoy a soak in the bubbling Jacuzzi or relax in the Turkish Bath. To work off the excesses of lunch or dinner whilst peering through the banana plantations, a glass-walled gymnasium is equipped with a half dozen high-tech, high-quality machines. A variety of holisitc treatments can also be arranged by appointment.

An ideal Hotel for winter sun-seekers looking for a relaxing taste of the Canaries in a haven of peace and tranquility.
