SHEEP'S BELLS OR AN IPOD!!...............

It is quite astounding that a tiny hamlet like Binibona can be the home to four lovely Hotels. Es Castell is the newest of the four and the British/Italian owners, James and Paola have succeeded in creating a haven of peace and tranquility. Agroitourism at its best – 750 acres of farmland surround the enchanting Hotel which lies on the side of the Tramuntana Hills with spectacular views over the countryside and villages. Just a few minutes up a winding road from Binibona through the sheep pastures and gnarled olive trees and you will find yourself in a different world where the sheep bells and gentle hum of the cicadas will accompany your siesta. James and Paola are “hands on” owners and very much in attendance, overseeing the well-being of their treasured guests. You will leave as family friends!

Climbing the cobbled steps to enter into the Hotel you arrive at a beautiful enclosed courtyard and can sense an old working farm. When I say “old”, I mean “old” – parts of the building date from the 13th Century! Care and attention has been given to keeping the character, and the Medieval well and olive press (“tafona”) are attractive features that draw the eye.

A cosy salon with roaring log fire in the winter months, an office for guests' use with computer and internet add to the facilities, and they even have ipods available with different selections of music. There is Wi-Fi in the public areas. Tea, coffee and water are available in the old olive press during the day which you pass through on your way to the pool and gardens. There is also an honesty bar if you fancy something a little stronger.

The pool is perched on a terrace and there are several terraces around it for taking the sun, shaded areas are also provided. All are places from which to contemplate the beauty of the Mallorquin landscape and listen to the gentle hush of the countryside. The Hotel only takes children in the Summer School holidays, so if you are seeking a break from the children (leave them with the grandparents!!) this is an excellent choice of Hotel.

The 11 bedrooms, whilst not the largest (obviously confined by the size of the original farm) are full of character although simply decorated and you are even greeted by a complimentary bottle of local wine. No televisions (there is one in the salon if you have withdrawal symptons!!) or telephones - James and Paola do not want to destroy the peace. All are heated and have air-conditioning. They all have en-suite facilities, some bathrooms and some shower rooms, lots of fluffy towels, bathrobes and hairdryers are present as one would expect from this style of Hotel. There are 6 Standard Rooms, 4 Superiors and two Junior Suites (a great honeymoon escape!) with terraces.

Breakfasts are served at your leisure in the main dining room and snacks are available throughout the day. Dinner is a special occasion each evening with the Chef constantly delighting with his small, but constantly changing “Chef’s Surprise Menu”. The emphasis is very much on “fresh”!! No frozen foods here, and where possible the products are produced “in house” – olives, lemons, oranges, figs, honey and almonds – picked from the garden and lamb and chicken from the farm. Fish and vegetarian options are also available. In the warmer months dinner is served outside on an upper terrace. Views are breathtaking. They also have evenings when a barbecue is available.

Although I am sure you will be tempted to pass your days at Es Castell in the laziest way possible the Hotel also offers guided walks/excursions and guided road bike trips if you are feeling energetic.

An ideal Hotel for those who want to escape to the beautiful countryside of Mallorca. Its central island location is a great base to explore from and walkers and cyclists are spoilt for choice. Relax and unwind in glorious surroundings.
