Location, Location, LOLAcation!!!........

Since the turn of the century and with special thanks to the opening of the Picasso Museum in 2003, the cultural capital of the Costa del Sol has been in a constant state of revival. Having already received the most impressive of facelifts, massive plans to revamp the port (and the neighbourhood that stretches between the seafront and the bustling commercial centre) are bringing Malaga’s already firmly established appeal to a whole new level.

In June 2007 I had the honour of joining in the inauguration festivities at Room Mate Lola. This refreshing Boutique Hotel has made an enlightening statement as to what we should expect in this still somewhat unprepossessing neighbourhod in the coming years. Take modern design, add a good splash of retro and a healthy pinch of wow-factor, throw in a young-spirited, friendly team and the result is a pleasing balance of style and comfort just 2 minutes on foot to Malaga’s main historical centre and shopping district.

A monochromatic colour scheme of black, grey and white sets the stage on arrival. The reception area, as well as the chill-out zone with its long L-shaped white leather sofas give rise to four floors of crisp, clean and uncluttered rooms. Comprising of Standard Doubles, Executive Doubles and Suites, some under the eaves, the Hotel’s 50 bedrooms are spacious, inviting and remarkably luminous. White is the order of the day in most, whilst one colour per floor, walls painted conservatively with accents of turquoise, emerald green, vibrant yellow and mauve play up the decor. All are equipped with flat screen TVs, free Wi-Fi internet access, well-stocked mini-bars, individual heating and air-con. The modestly decorated en-suite marble bathrooms all have bath, with the exception of one wheelchair accessible room that features a roll-in shower.

Simple yet sufficient buffet breakfasts can be taken until noon in the open-plan, light-filled cafeteria situated opposite reception. Wall-to-wall windows make this an invigourating place in which to start your day. The Hotel does not have a restaurant, but again, you are just a stone’s throw from the most traditional tapas bars in Málaga, as well as a plethora of dining options.

If you are arriving by car, be gone the nightmare normally associated with parking in a large Spanish city! A private car park with abundant spaces (and the ever necessary lift) are at your service.

An ideal citybreak hotel if you are looking for welcoming, stylish and central accommodation at easy walking distance to all of Malaga’s sites and attractions at superb value for money.
