Casa Grande Fontao is a little gem in an eclave of unparalleled natural beauty. Mari, the lovely owner, tells me the house is estimated to have been built in the 12th century. In later years it was home to her grandparents, and it is here where her father was born. Following meticulous restoration, Mari has turned her family’s home into an idyllic rural hideaway. Peace and tranquility abound in this nature lover’s paradise. On arrival, the feeling is magical.

Mari´s aura is one of contagious calm and kindness, and it is this same aura that penetrates the entire house. Typically Galician in construction with its thick stone walls, magnificent beamed celings and wood floors. Large windows let the light pour into the cosy salon and library. Whilst rustic charm is the heart and soul of the house, modern art and the somewhat minimalist decor add a touch of avant-garde – the balance is superb.

The 7 Double bedrooms, 2 of which are in the old wine press, are no exception. Spacious and light, uncluttered and spotlessly clean, the ambiance is truly rest-inspiring. Beautifully soft linen sheets top the large Double and twin beds (side-by-side), as do fluffy duvets in the winter. Charming restored antique furnishings can be found throughout. All the rooms have baths, with the exception of one wheelchair accessible room that has a roll-in shower. All are heated in the colder months, and televisions are available on request.

Tasty breakfasts are served in the main-floor breakfast room, and dinner can be requested with advance notice.

The Hotel´s location is excellent for experiencing Northern Galicia, as well as the Camino de Santiago which can be reached in a mere 10-minutes on foot. Santiago de Compostela itself is under an hour’s drive from the Hotel, ideal for a day trip. Walkers can explore glorious routes right from the Hotel, or in the nearby Fragas do Eume Natural Park – the most spectacular Natural Park of Galicia. Horse-riding, kayaking and canoeing can also be arranged in the vicinity. Also recommended is a visit to the medieval towns of Pontedeume and Betanzos, both a short drive from the Hotel, as are the beaches of Miño.

An ideal Hotel if you are looking for an authentic taste of Galicia.
