AGEING WITH GRACE ..............

A 200th birthday is something to be celebrated and the quaint village house that is home to this intimate little Hotel has recently achieved that landmark. The charming owners, Luis and Jesus, know this from the old original deeds (on display in the house) that date the property exactly. These deeds have also given the Hotel its name “La Fructuosa” – the original proprietor.

Gaucin is an “arty” village – the views alone across to the coast of North Africa are enough to inspire anyone to pick up paint brush and palette – and Luis and Jesus are no exception. The house is full of original works of art and they pride themselves on their collection happily showing it to the Hotel guests. Their knowledge of art is inspiring and they actively encourage local artists by presenting their works in exhibitions in the Hotel’s old stables which are now used as a dining room.

Personal service is paramount and whilst the Hotel is simple, clients are “bowled over” by the kindness and attention shown to them by their hosts. What also amazes clients of the Hotel is the views from the upper rooms and the terraces. From how many Hotels do you have views of two continents, three countries and the Mediterranean Sea and the Atlantic Ocean?

The unassuming front door leads you into the reception area and sitting room of the converted village house – it is cosy and inviting. Jesus and Luis have provided a reading library with many old antique books. There is also an impressive array of guide books which will help you to get the most out of your time in Gaucin and Andalucia. Beamed ceilings and wooden floors abound.

There are just five bedrooms and again they are simply furnished. If you are looking for high tech, then you will not find it here. The bedrooms are very Spanish “old world” in their feel and the bathrooms follow this theme. The rooms have central heating and there is satellite TV. Rooms on the upper floors have the views. There is also a communal terrace on the top floor from which everyone can share in those vistas. Some rooms have hydro massage baths and the others showers (please specify which you prefer when making your booking).

You are very much part of the family here and breakfasts are served at your leisure in the main dining room on the lower ground floor; local jams, honey and bread are served. The old wine press is located in the restaurant and the exhibitions of paintings or photos by local artists or photographers have pride of place. Dinner is served here too on Fridays and Saturdays in the summer months (the restaurant also spills over onto a terrace with pergola). In other months there are plenty of restaurants in which to dine in the village. Luis is the Chef and produces typically local Spanish and Andalucian dishes that follow the seasons – fresh grilled goat’s cheese served with local honey, lamb and cinnamon stew with cous-cous, and seared tuna with onions, tomato and mint are just three examples.

Gaucin is a pretty white village and is on the route of “white villages “ in Andalucia. It is surrounded by wonderful walking countryside and horse-riding can be arranged locally. Ronda and the coast are within easy reach by car.

An ideal Hotel for those who want a simple Spanish experience with the most amicable of hosts in a picturesque village. A walker’s paradise.
