A FEAST AT THE ABBEY………

In the sleepy Medieval village of Ampudia, dominated by one of Castilla y Leon´s most prestigious fortresses (on the ¨Castle Route¨) and the town church´s monumental tower, an inconspicuous surprise awaits behind the stone walls that stand proudly next to the main square. La Casa del Abad de Ampudia, originally belonging to the church, was home to the Abbot in the early 17th century. Acquired later by Don Diego García de Tovar, remarkably, it has remained in the family and is now one of the village´s most emblematic buildings.

Although La Casa del Abad has seen some modifications over the centuries, it has always been well preserved. Following complete restoration, all whilst maintaining as many of the original features as possible, in 1998, the García brothers opened their Hotel to the public. Interestingly, one of the descendents, Angel García Puertas, was the architect for the renovations. Little did they know, their family heirloom would not only bring guests, but it would also put their town firmly on the tourist map.

As you enter the Hotel you will be immediately taken aback by the magnificent cupola – like a fresco of a sun, it ¨shines¨ down on you from above. You will surely take pleasure in exploring the various public areas of the Hotel that have been converted into salons. One of the previous family members was a doctor, and his pharmacy is now a pretty sitting room with fireplace – a cosy spot to sit and listen to the classical music that plays gently in the background. The old stables are now like a mini-museum with antique farm equipment on display in what were once the animals troughs. All this surrounds an attractive interior patio.

The Hotel has 24 bedrooms, 16 Doubles and Junior Suites of rustic, old-world Spanish style are fittingly found in the original Abbot´s house, whilst the remaining 8 are new, avant-garde additions. These two sections of the Hotel are separated by a contemporary salon of beige and charcoal tones with antique gold leaf walls, handsome furnishings and fireplace. It is here where past meets present, and the comparison is striking.

Whilst some of the rooms in the original Abbot´s house are not the largest (owing to building restrictions that apply to buildings of such historical significance), space has been used imaginatively. Named after prominent precedents of the García family, many of these rooms boast original wood beams and doors, sparkling terracotta tiled floors. Each strikingly decorated with stencils or washes in warm hues of gold, ochre, blues and green. Antique furnishings abound, many of which are family heirlooms. The new section features 3 Duplex Suites with balconies and sound systems, 2 Junior Suites and 3 Doubles, all with sleek bathrooms where stone, glass and chrome are the protagonists. All 24 rooms have baths – some are hydromassage, whilst others have baths with hydromassage shower. All are equipped with TV, internet access, telephone, heating and air-con, safe, mini-bar and hair dryer. Bathrobes and slippers are provided in the Suites.

The old wine-press now houses the Hotel´s restaurant, ¨El Arambol¨. Under the auspices of renowned Chef Joaquín Koerper, guests can savour fine cuisine that is based faithfully on the most typical productions of the region. Add to this an extensive wine list of the best Spanish wines and the result is an exquisite epicurean experience. The restaurant is open to the public and reservations are essential.

Let yourself be pampered at La Casa de Abad´s Spa which features an indoor swimming pool, Turkish bath and Sauna, and of course you can induldge in a multitude of treatments including hot stone and mud therapies, seaweed wraps, hydrotherapy, wine therapy, chocolate therapy....and the list goes on!

For those wishing to burn off any excess calories, the Hotel does have tennis and paddle courts (at 200m), as well as bicycles for hire. Several golf courses can also be found within a 30km radius of Casa del Abad.

An ideal Hotel if you are looking for a weekend escape, extended holiday or a stop-over on a gourmet tour en-route to another destination in Spain or Portugal - even easier now that Ryanair flies to Valladolid! Treat yourserlf to a gourmet experience for the mind, body and soul.
