La Puebla de Sanabria, perched on an bluff, is a fortified medieval village in the province of Zamora, just a short distance to the border of Portugal. Newly opened in 2006, just up the road from its sister Hotel ¨Posada Real La Cartería¨, this Hotel has changed hands many times since the time of its construction in the 15th century. One of the first buildings erected next to the medieval Castle, it amazingly retains its original four walls. Posada Real de las Misas sits on the edge of the main square next to the town hall and the church, at the highest point of the village. As with all bastide towns, the streets are steep and cobbled, enhancing the enchanting charm that fills the air. The Hotel´s roof terrace, library, restaurant and several of the bedrooms afford beautiful views over the entire valley and the Tera River below.

Whilst the interior structure has changed with passing years, this history-filled building still maintains its old-world charm with its stone walls and beamed celings, now complemented by contemporary design for that touch of flare. A colour scheme of grey, red and white is warmed by ambient lighting and modern paintings by none other than Paco, the owner. A few small, yet comfortable salons can be found throughout the Hotel, and a good selection of games are available for your leisure. A sleek bar/cafetería, also open to the public, is situated just off reception; worth mentioning is it opens at noon and is closed between 5:00 and 8:30pm.

The Hotel´s 15 bedrooms, each unique owing to the interesting interior structure, are divided amongst Doubles (of which two have Jacuzzi, the rest hydromassage bath or shower) and Suites. There is a family Suite, consisting of a double bedroom, a children´s room with bunk beds, kitchenette and salon - ideal for families with younger children. All offer views either over the Tera River, the Castle and church or ¨Plaza Mayor¨, the town square, and a few have enclosed gallery windows. I do recommend a room at the back of the Hotel; one for more expansive views of the natural surroundings, and secondly, the church bell does ring at night (although I am told the Hotel is enquiring about the possibility of silent nights) – light sleepers will appreciate the absence of the twice hourly chime. All rooms are equipped with flatscreen TVs and DVDs (movies available in reception), individual heating, safe, mini-bar, coffee and tea-making facilities and hair dryer.

A buffet breakfast may be taken at your leisure in the restaurant whilst enjoying those lovely views over the Tera River. Savoury traditional Sanabrian cuisine is on offer for both lunch and dinner.

The Sanabria Lake Natural Park, just 8km from the Hotel, is home to a large variety of flora and fauna, which can be observed from the many walking and hiking routes, and even from horse back. The lake is fanstastic for swimming. Kayaking and river rafting can be arranged in reception. Daily sightseeing flights (in three-seater planes) from Braganza (Portugal) offer a unique way to see the area.

An ideal Hotel if you are looking for a taste of.medieval authenticity. Almost untouched by international tourism, this Hotel is an excellent option for discovering the natural beauty of Real Spain and an ideal stopping off point on a tour of this beautiful region.
