It is not often that one comes across an original building that has been rebuilt stone by stone. This is exactly what happened with this lovely Hotel in 2004 and 2005. After the imminent destruction of the palace was announced (owing to the building of a motorway), the family of Don Jose Maria Solano who had always owned the stately palace decided to classify and identify each stone and literally move the building to it’s new 11 acre safe haven. The idea of a Hotel formed in their minds and Palacio Urgoiti is the wonderful result. What to do with the eleven acres? Why, build a golf course (of course!), hence the 9-hole pitch and putt (par three) course now installed in the lovely grounds. There is a driving range, practice putting green , pro shop and instructor to complete the golfing facilities. The Hotel is some 15 minutes from the old city centre of Bilbao.

The stone and terracotta-coloured palace is an imposing building, and as you enter the drive one realises one is somewhere rather grand. The overall effect is very pleasing with the bright greens of the golf course and estate complementing the Palace.

Reception is equally inviting and the professional multilingual staff are on hand to help in every way possible. Complimentary airport transfers are provided and the staff will always help with restaurant reservations (a must for the most popular). Although the golf course and restaurant are open to the public there is a sense of calm within the Hotel. The salons and bar area are inviting and comfy; the classic theme and luxurious decoration is continued throughout. There are plenty of places to sit and discreetly relax with a gin and tonic, and the outside terraces with the views over the golf course make this a veritable nineteenth hole!!

The excellent facilities continue with an indoor swimming pool and gymnasium which provide you with no excuse not to work off the excesses of all the stunning Basque cuisine that you may have eaten – those Michelin starred restaurants do take their toll on the waistline!

The 43 bedrooms, not surprisingly, all have views of the golf course. There is a Suite, 7 Junior Suites, 14 Superior Doubles, 17 Standard Doubles and 4 Singles. I loved the Junior Suite in the converted old chapel of the palace – with its neo-classic mouldings (even the old altar is used over the bed!!). There are two other rooms in this old part, one with a romantic four-poster bed; these three rooms are ideally suited for honeymooners. They are all immensely stylish with rich fabrics used throughout. Several of the upper categories of rooms have balconies, and they also come with DVD players. The Standard doubles on the ground floor have terraces. All rooms have individual heating and air-con, mini-bar with free non-alcoholic beverages, safe, flat-screen satellite TV and Wi-Fi/ADSL internet connection. They have gorgeous brown marble bathrooms, luxurious “Penhaligon’s of London” toiletries, a wonderful quality of linen is arrayed on the bed and high quality fluffy towels and bathrobes will be found in the bathrooms. One bedroom is adapted for wheelchair access and for those with mobility problems.

Lovely buffet breakfasts are served at your leisure in the intimate breakfast room. The main restaurant spills over onto the outdoor terrace in the summer months, and an open fireplace warms things up in the winter. The restaurant has an excellent reputation and represents the finest of Basque country cuisine. There is a varied room service menu and the bar offers tapas and light snacks. You will not go hungry at this Hotel!

An ideal Hotel for those who want a grand historical building away from the centre of Bilbao with the added attraction of excellent facilities. Beaches are nearby and it is a short taxi ride to the Guggenheim Museum.
